A Dip into Crochet Basics

Learning how to crochet is not really such a difficult thing to do. Anyone who has an interest in art and making patterns and pieces of your own can really learn to crochet in no time at all. All you need to know, of course, are these crochet basics.

When dealing with such crochet basics, it’s better to start with the materials you’d need. These would be the needle, or the hook, and the yarn. For your needle or hook, it is better to use ones of the sizes G or H. These are the bigger hooks. It’s really easier to use bigger hooks because the smaller hooks are more difficult to handle.

And, of course, the yarn. Crochet basics would tell you that choosing the yarn is not difficult to do as well. Just make sure that you don’t use Chenile yarn or wool yarn. Just choose yarn of the regular kind, the type you can buy from any department store. But just like your hook, buy yarn that is not too small. Small is difficult to handle, when learning the crochet basics. Make sure your yarn is strong. To check how strong your yarn is, rub the yarn between your fingers. If the yarn unravels, then don’t purchase it. Look for something else. Also, choose yarn of a lighter color. This makes seeing your progress easier.

And don’t forget scissors! Make sure you have a good pair, and not the dull kind. Dull scissors can make crocheting very burdensome.

Next on the crochet basics should be how to hold the needle or hook. It’s easy to hold it, just do it like you would a pen or pencil. Pressure should be placed on the flat portion of the hook. This pressure should come from your thumb. Your index finger should be position just behind the flat portion. This position lets your index finger guide the hook’s motion. Your middle finger would assist in handling the loops you’ve made onto your hook, while you draw more yarn.

As for holding the yarn, there really is no portion in crochet basics that teaches the proper way to do this. That’s because people have different ways of holding the yarn. It depends on finding a comfortable position for yourself. What’s important here is that your yarn should be over your index finger. It is easier to crochet that way. Just find the position you’re most comfortable with and take it from there.

Now that you know these crochet basics, you are set to start making your own pieces! So, let the creative juices flow, and unravel the piece you want to make right now.
