Storing Family Keepsakes

The first step in storing your keepsakes is to decide what you are going to keep and what goes. Try only to keep those things that hold a special place in your heart or hold an important event. By carefully choosing what to keep, you will end up with a small gathering of items that bring joy to your heart.

The same can be said for your memorabilia. If you hold on to too many things, your precious memories are going to be lost in the clutter.

Once you have decided on what you are keeping, you can then make the next important decision, where to store or display your items.

Whether you decide to store or display, you need to be sure to protect your keepsakes from acid, lignin and PVC. Acid: A chemical substance that can weaken paper and cloth, causing it to brown and become brittle.

Lignin: An organic substance that is present in wood pulp. It becomes more and more acidic as it deteriorates. (The yellowing effect of a newspaper is an example of lignin.)

PVC: (also known as polyvinyl chloride) A chemically active plastic that, when combined with moisture in the air can emit hydrochloric acid. All of the things will destroy your precious photos and memorabilia.

This all may sound complicated, but it really isn’t. Just remember, whether you are going to store your keepsakes in a box or place them in a scrapbook, check to make sure all the materials are free of these harmful chemicals.

There are many options out there that are safe to use for all your scrapbooking needs. A great way to protect your scrapbook pages is with page protectors.

Page protectors are acid-free plastic sheets that display and protect pages. With scrapbook page protectors you can protect your precious pictures in the albums or a personal diary.

Page protectors are acid-free and archival safe for all your photos, journals, records and family history memorabilia. They come in several different full sheet sizes as well as a Gallery style photo page protector.

All of them fit a standard three ring binder. Special page protectors for three-dimensional pages are also available. These protection pages not only protect your objects but also reduce indentations caused by three-dimensional objects.
