Taking Great Baby Photos

Babies are probably the most popular subject of photographs. The minute baby is born the cameras are clicking away. Awake or asleep, playing or still, there’s always a reason to take a picture of your little cutie.

Unfortunately, even with all those pictures being taken, we still seem to miss the opportunity to take some that would be a great part of our collection. Here are a few tips for taking photos of your little one that will be great in your collection.

To really document your baby’s growth and development, take monthly photos. Doing this will create a photo growth chart of you little one. They will also make great material for other projects down the road.

You also want to capture all your child’s emotions. So don’t be so quick to discard the photos of him scowling, frowning or even crying. All of these emotions are part of who your baby is and make a wonderful display of his personality.

Another great tip is to keep the photos simple. Too much background clutter will detract from the real subject of your photo. So rather than surrounding baby with props, try having him hold just his favorite stuffed animal or book. This is one of those occasions where less really is more.

We all love seeing our little ones photographed in just the right pose, but some of the most darling photographs are candid. They really capture the essence of your child.

A snapshot of your cutie wearing a sweet potato facial could end up being favored over one of her in a ruffled dress surrounded by teddy bears. So don’t overlook the possibility of taking candid photos more often.

A tip I received from a photographer is to play with perspectives. Play with angles, levels or close up shots. Something else to try that is quite easy is different lighting. Adjusting the level of light for indoor photos by removing a lampshade or using a different watt bulb is quite effective.

You can also try taking pictures in the light of an open window. Subtle changes can make a big impact in your photos.

Now, grab that camera and get creative. You’ll be happy that you did.
