The Harmful Effects of Using an Antibacterial Soap

Many claim that using an antibacterial soap for hand washing and taking a shower is the best way to get rid of germs. However, many health experts say that it does not help at all and may only contribute to spreading more bacterial disease.

All antibacterial soaps contain triclosan that is classified as a drug by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Both agencies consider this harmful chemical to be of a big risk to people and the environment.

Studies made show that triclosan is like an antibiotic that eradicates bacteria. This may add to the development of bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics. Furthermore, triclosan is considered to be much the same with other toxic chemicals like Agent Orange, dioxins and PCB’s.

Also, it has been proven that triclosan found in an antibacterial soap causes skin irritations and diseases. But since triclosan contains phenols, no pain can be felt because it numbs the sensory nerve endings of the skin. This can eventually lead to circulatory problems, convulsions, cold sweats, comatose or even death, according to critics of antibacterial soap.

Moreover, triclosan can accumulate toxic elements that can damage the lungs, kidneys and liver when it is stored in the body fats. In addition, it has also been suspected to cause sterility, paralysis, immune deficiency, hemorrhage, decreased fertility and sexual dysfunction although it has never been really tested on animals and humans because of severe health risks.

Another element found in an antibacterial soap is triclocarban which is similar with triclosan. Studies on animals show that triclocarban can affect reproduction as well as cause cancer.

The two chemicals discussed above are the reasons why many doctors do not suggest using an antibacterial soap and it does not end there. Apparently, there are other harmful active elements present in most antibacterial soaps such as the following:

– Potassium Lauryl Sulfate
– BHT
– DMDM Hydantoin
– Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate
– Sodium Laureth Sulfate
– Tetrasodium EDTA
– FD&C and D&C Colors

With all the scientific research done on antibacterial soap and its harmful effects, it is not surprising why its use is not recommended. Always remember that the best type of soap to use for hand washing and taking a bath are natural and pure soaps that you can find in health and beauty shops. It can be in the form of liquid or bar. However, you should always check the contents to be sure that they do not contain harsh chemicals, especially if you have sensitive skin.
